How Fern Connor prepares for a fitness competition

“Preparing for a competition, such as ATHX, isn’t just about showing up on the day - it’s about months of consistent, structured workouts that challenge both your body and your mind.

For me, The Women’s Gym is where that happens. It’s the space where nerves turn into confidence, where discipline builds strength, and where the work truly begins.

Choosing the right gym makes a huge difference to how I perform when it really counts. The Women’s Gym has provided me with the facilities, equipment, and community to help me achieve my goals.

Building strength

Strength training is the backbone of my prep. Heavy compound lifts, such as squats, deadlifts, and presses are the foundation of my programme and prepare me for the Strength Zone at ATHX. They also make me more resilient for everything else the competition throws at me.

Progressive overload is my non‑negotiable. I’m always working to lift a little heavier, move a little better, and step things up safely. The Women’s Gym plays a huge role here - the power racks, free weights, and space to enjoy a seamless workout allows me to stay consistent and keep progressing.

Finding my pace

Competitions such as ATHX demand more than strength - they require endurance. My prep includes interval runs, rower and ski‑erg sprints, and sessions on the bike‑erg to build both power and stamina. Some days are all about intensity; others are about staying steady and learning to hold pace.

The wide range of cardio equipment at The Women’s Gym means I can achieve every part of my conditioning without compromise.

Spaces that support recovery

Not every workout is pushing hard – recovery is just as important. The Regen Room at The Women’s Gym Wilmslow has elevated my training. Having a dedicated, quiet space to stretch, work on mobility and use massage guns, means I can stay consistent and avoid burn out.

Preparing for ATHX is empowering. It’s where strength, discipline, and self‑belief all meet. The Women’s Gym is where I’ve built not only the fitness to compete, but the confidence to walk onto that race floor ready to give it everything.

If you’re thinking about competing one day - go for it. Stepping up and showcasing the work you put in, day in and day out, is one of the most rewarding experiences you can give yourself.”
